Hey guys, I'm new to the forum, been reading it for a while. This has been an interesting topic for me, I think of it as the Michael Vick syndrome. Why is Michael Vick the poster-boy for the NFL? He's flashy and sells tickets. Sadly, most younger drummers would rather watch Virgil play snare etudes with his feet than watch Gadd play "50 Ways...". To me, "Rosanna" is <u>the</u> groove, where the bar is set, but to a Linkin Park fan, is it boring? It's all subjective and everyone has a different idea of great drumming. Let Thomas Lang split flam accents between his hands and feet at light speed, maybe some kid watching that will someday turn into the next Jim Keltner, merely because that clinic made him start practicing more. Any time somebody makes drumming more popular and creates interest in what we do, its a beautiful thing.

First of all, Thomas may have gotten a cold reception in Toronto, but he got ovations DURING his solo in Vancouver... and i am happy for that because he has earned it and his ability proves it, that is undeniable.
I agree 150% with Greaseleg. You never know who, or how, that could inspire. Stretch the boundaries in ANY way... show what can be done. Jeff did it, Vinnie did it, Gadd did it. Now in their own ways, Lang and the 'new' guys are doing it. No inovation should be knocked just because it isn't something else. I hated Shaq his whole career, but you can't say he is a bad post player because he can't shoot free throws... you can say he is a bad free throw shooter cause he can't shoot free throws. I'll take Lang any day, and i will take Jeff any day, and i will take Keltner any day, and i will take Vinnie any day... they all do THEIR thing better than anyone else does it.

P.S. Terry Bozzio lives in Austin... you wouldn't happen to be him would you? Had to check [img]wink.gif[/img]

I haven't seen much of Thomas but what I have seen suggests another 'chops for the sake of chops' drummer, just like so many other of his contemporaries.

I get tired of the double bass pedal ego trips some of these drummers have. It's like they have to cram as much double pedal as possible in every other bar.

They have nothing compared to drummers with feel, technique and most importantly, spirit, like Gary Husband.

I actually liked the tune Beth. I think it was their crowning achievement, actually. Their more-rock oriented stuff was much more pretentious after hearing that. And if it wasnt so already, they certainly didnt have to play any more clubs after that. [img]wink.gif[/img]

I hear what you guys are saying. Listen, if we listen to Vinnie, Virg, Weckl, Dennis, Gary, et al blowin their wads ALL the time, it's going to become a "buzz-drone" in the ears after a while. But these guys can groove too. It's just that theyre in the spotlight for what they are able to do [or, their strong points], AOT other aspects...

But in this day & age, or any other prior, FTM, it indeed can often become the "arena super-sports-star" syndrome...hey, it sells sodas, sneakers, briefs, equiptment & accessories, dontcha know...hey...it's "a ['THE'] business"... ;cP

The ultimate goal is to make music w your instrument. However, "music" in & of itslef is objectionable art [which people often try to make "subjectional"]...CIP, a non-drummer onlooker may see that fast lick ["statement"] you "snuck" [img]wink.gif[/img] in at the "right musical moment" & say, "Gee, youre REALLY fast." How many times have you heard this comment? Of course, evenness of stroke & solidness of time is [or should be ;c)] in there, but that is subconscious to them. "Fast" is the comment you will get 98% of the time...or simply, "gee, youre really good"...

It's the "bigger or faster is better" "Westernized" attitude...average persons often misinterpret "fast" in music as highly accomplished. Today more than ever this seems the norm. How about the 80's rock gtrsts? Shredding 32nds over 3-4 chords, scalular or arpeggiated [etc]...peeps go, "Whoah!" But jazz, which has much more depth & complexity in the tonal / melodic / harmonic realm, & involves playg over many more chord structures & changes, is overlooked as being "too tedious"...go figure...they love the "blatantly obvious," dont they...I refuse to lose any more sleep over it...my gtrst buddy is losing hair over this [his] "mantra," self-imposed, which is wasted brain power if'n ya ask me...I'M not going to get any gray hairs over too much self-righteousness any more... ;cP

Just make some music in whatever style & whichever way you can... ;c)

Matricks... Now that I think of it... I think you assumed the Clinic Tombo went to was in Toronto, it was not...

Ya I was there. I think the Long and Mcquade staff was kind of worried about it not being full, but sure enough there was a lineup outside half an hour before the show and they needed extra chairs once everything got going (even though it was in a fairly small room). I think he was quite well received actually. I think he got an ovation at the end of the show, and people clapped where you would expect people to clap... I'm not sure if you'll be able to tell from the mp3's I'll be posting in the next couple of days (I cut out most of the applause for space reasons) but it seemed like a normal chops-type clinic to me.
